Professor Acton’s laboratory at UVA is called VIVA - Virginia Image and Video Analysis. They specialize in biological image analysis problems. The research emphases of VIVA include machine learning for image and video analysis, AI for education, tracking, segmentation, and enhancement.

Post Doctorals

Matthew Korban

Matthew Korban

Matthew Korban is a Postdoctoral Research Associate and an IEEE Senior Member working with Prof. Scott T. Acton in VIVA Lab. He received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University (LSU) in Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he led several recognizable research projects, including LSU CAVE2 VR, the largest and most advanced VR structure in the world. His research interests are Image and Video Processing, Computer Graphics, Human Motion, Facial and Geometric modeling, and Virtual Reality.

Graduate Students

Jonathan McGee

Jonathan McGee

Jonathan McGee is an Electrical Engineering PhD student who joined VIVA in Fall 2023. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 2017. Jonathan worked in industry for 5 years, building skills in Software Engineering and Signal Processing. His research interests include video processing, action recognition, and machine learning.
Samarth Singh

Samarth Singh

Samarth is currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering co-advised by DR. SCOTT T. ACTON and DR. NATASHA D. SHEYBANI. His primary research interests include developing principled and explainable medical image analyses algorithms for clinical adoption.

Soumee Guha

Soumee is pursuing her PhD in Computer Engineering advised by Dr. Scott T. Acton, currently working on projects related to single-molecule localization and tracking. She is also interested in reinforcement learning based trackers and related topics in image processing and computer...
Shuhan Ding

Shuhan Ding

Shuhan is pursuing her PhD in Electrical Engineering advised by Dr. Scott T. Acton. Her research interests include medical AI, image processing and computer vision.
Tanjin Taher Toma

Tanjin Taher Toma

Tanjin is pursuing her PhD in Electrical Engineering advised by by Dr. Scott T. Acton, and focusses on developing advanced algorithms for bacterial biofilm analysis. Tanjin's research interest includes biomedical image processing, machine learning, and deep learning.
